The title Deputy Prime Minister became official at the beginning of the Gorton Government in 1968 following a brief period where Country Party Leader Sir John McEwen was Prime Minister after the death of former Liberal Prime Minister Harold Holt. In a Liberal/Nationals Coalition Government, the Leader of The Nationals assumes the role of Deputy Prime Minister, while in an ALP Government the Deputy Leader is appointed to the position. * Theodore resigned from the Ministry on 9 July 1930, but remained Deputy Leader of the ALP until his reinstatement on 29 January 1931. * Forde was Prime Minister 6 to 13 July 1945. + Alfred Deakin, as the second most senior Minister in the Barton Ministry took on the role of Acting Prime Minister when Barton travelled overseas. + William Lyne could only be confirmed as the second most senior Minister in the first and second Deakin Ministries without mention of holding the position Deputy Prime Minister.
